Popular South African Maskandi artist Scebi Dlamini, widely known by his stage name Inkosi Yamagcokama, has died following a deadly car crash in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.

Dlamini was killed in the accident in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, 2026, near the Melomed Hospital intersection in Richards Bay. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport confirmed that he suffered severe injuries and died at the scene despite efforts by emergency responders.

The crash has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s Maskandi music community, where Dlamini had built a prominent following.

Scebi Dlamini Car Crash Happened in Richards Bay

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, the accident occurred at a traffic light opposite Melomed Hospital in Richards Bay. Local reporting also identified the location as the John Ross Highway near the Melomed intersection.

Dlamini was reportedly traveling to a performance in Richards Bay when the crash occurred. Three members of his stage crew were traveling with him, according to a statement from his family and management reported by The Citizen.

Another member of Dlamini’s team, Gumu “Gupta” Mchunu, also died following the crash. Two other people were injured and received hospital treatment. The family said one was in critical but stable condition while another was receiving medical care.

Police Investigating Cause of Crash

The South African Police Service accident unit has taken over the investigation, according to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport. Provincial officials said police are best placed to determine what caused the crash.
