Anferny Freeman: Man Charged with Murder in St. Helena Island Mass Shooting That Killed 4, Injured 15

A major breakthrough has emerged in the St. Helena Island mass shooting that left four people dead and 15 others wounded during a crowded high school reunion. Anferny Devon Freeman, 27, has been formally charged with four counts of murder and multiple weapons offenses in connection with the deadly October 12, 2025, shooting outside Willie’s Bar and Grill.

Charges Filed More Than Five Weeks After the Shooting

On November 14, 2025, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office announced that Freeman—already in custody on an unrelated 2024 machine gun possession charge—had been served with six arrest warrants, including:

  • 4 counts of murder
  • Possession of a weapon during a violent crime
  • Aggravated breach of peace
  • Felony gun possession

Bond was denied on the murder counts.

Authorities say the attack stemmed from a personal feud between Freeman and Kashawn “KK” Smalls-Glaze, 22 — one of the four people killed and confirmed to have been shooting during the incident. At least three shooters exchanged gunfire in a parking lot filled with hundreds of reunion attendees.

Chaos at a High School Reunion

The shooting erupted just after midnight at the Battery Creek High School 25-year reunion, attended by more than 350 people. An initial hostile exchange between Freeman and Smalls-Glaze escalated rapidly. A third, still-unidentified shooter also opened fire.

Investigators recovered three firearms, along with extensive ballistic evidence.

Freeman himself suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to the hospital by his girlfriend.

Victims Identified

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office identified the four people killed:

All 15 injured survivors have been released from the hospital.

Sheriff: More Arrests Expected

Sheriff P.J. Tanner said investigators have not forgotten the 15 survivors and that more charges are likely. The Sheriff’s Office is working alongside SLED, the FBI, and ATF to track down additional shooters and analyze ballistics.

He also pointed to ongoing safety concerns at Willie’s Bar and Grill, an establishment with a long history of police calls. Tanner vowed to pursue nuisance abatement to shut it down:
“The bottom line is we are going to put you out of business.”

Community Still in Shock

The shooting has rattled St. Helena Island’s tight-knit Gullah community, where violent crime is historically low. Residents continue seeking answers and accountability as the investigation moves forward.

Freeman’s next bond hearing will take place in circuit court as authorities prepare for further arrests in the case.
