LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer was killed Tuesday afternoon during a shootout with an armed suspect near East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street.

The fatal Las Vegas officer shooting occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on August 4, 2026, in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue, near Interstate 11 in the eastern Las Vegas Valley.

According to Las Vegas police, the department received a 911 call reporting an armed person at a nearby business. The caller said the suspect appeared intoxicated, was behaving erratically and was waving a firearm.

LVMPD officers and police drones were dispatched to the location. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said officers encountered the suspect after arriving and an exchange of gunfire followed.

Las Vegas Officer Dies at Hospital

A 30-year-old Metro officer was struck during the gun battle and rushed to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

McMahill initially did not publicly release the officer’s name while authorities worked to notify relatives. He described the fallen officer as a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who had served with LVMPD since November 2023.

News 3 Las Vegas later identified the officer through sources as Austin Abdelnabi, 30. At the time of the initial announcement, LVMPD had not yet issued a formal public identification.

The armed suspect was also shot and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The suspect’s identity and further information about the circumstances leading to the confrontation had not been released.

Sheriff Says Department and Community Are Grieving

McMahill went directly to the hospital following the police shooting in Las Vegas to meet the officer’s relatives and fellow officers.

The sheriff said the department was grieving alongside the officer’s family and the wider Las Vegas community. Investigators had not yet provided details about how many officers fired their weapons, what type of firearm the suspect carried or whether body-camera footage captured the confrontation.

The shooting prompted a major police response around East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street. Motorists were advised to avoid the area while detectives processed the scene and collected evidence.

Investigation Into Tropicana Avenue Shooting Continues

LVMPD’s Force Investigation Team is expected to investigate the officers’ actions and reconstruct the sequence of events. As with other officer-involved shootings, police are also expected to release an initial briefing and additional information after investigators review body-camera video, physical evidence and witness accounts.

The department maintains a public database containing briefings, reports and reviews of fatal officer-involved uses of force. However, comprehensive reports are often not released until criminal and administrative investigations have been completed.

Authorities have not disclosed the name of the deceased suspect or the business where the original armed-person call originated.
