The iconic magazine made an offer to the daughter of the greatest hockey player of all time, Wayne Gretzky, during the early stages of her relationship with golfer Johnson.
Gretzky is frequently seen cheering for her fiance on the fairways of major tournaments, and while they are usually on the same team, Johnson put his foot down this time around due to his inability to support the unique career opportunity.
Gretzky revealed during an appearance on the Pillows and Beer podcast with American reality television stars Austen Kroll and Craig Conover that Johnson was willing to dip into his own pocket to avoid seeing his better half grace the pages of Playboy — most likely naked.
“Dustin — just remember how much I adore you — Playboy asked me to do, you know, Playboy, and I said, 'Yes, this is an incredible opportunity,'" Gretzky explained.
“It had to be around the time we began dating, so I'm guessing around 2013.”
They handed me a sum of money, a number, and Dustin was all, 'Absolutely not. I intend to match it. You are not performing it.' 'I don't believe so' — and I was like, 'OK'. "Even though money isn't the issue, I could tell he was bothered by it, and I was like, 'You know what, it's fine'."
The pair's disagreement over Playboy hasn't harmed their relationship, as Gretzky hinted last month on Instagram that their wedding was getting closer by posting photos and videos of Vera Wang gowns.
Gretzky was on hand to witness Johnson's victory at the Masters last year, and even stole the show at Augusta with a cheeky outfit choice. The 32-year-old drew attention on day one of golf's most prestigious tournament with a low-cut number, then switched to a green jacket on the final day as her beau stormed to victory.
If you're unfamiliar with the Masters, the winner is presented with a green jacket each year, which made Gretzky's clothing choice somewhat daring.
Johnson and Gretzky toasted Gretzky's Masters victory with a trip to the idyllic Caribbean island of St Barts with a group of friends.
Johnson's brother Austin — who caddied for him at the Masters and was in tears on the final day — and his wife, Samantha, took the first seats on the private jet. Kim Melnichenko, Paulina's best friend, and her partner Matt Forss were also in attendance, as were Emily Birdsall, her beau Sam, and former caddie Miguel Rivera.
The group celebrated in grand style while taking in the views from the infinity pool. Additionally, footage showed them taking a massive round of shots prior to playing Jenga.
Gretzky demonstrated her own golf prowess during her December birthday celebrations, and earlier this year opened up about growing up in the spotlight as a result of her famous father.
“You must always maintain a reserved demeanor. The most important thing is that they worked their hardest for it; my father worked his entire life for it,” Gretzky explained on The Netchicks podcast.
“He deserves everything; he does not deserve to be treated like a brat.
I never had the opportunity to be a child. Not that I'm missing out on anything — I had the best life imaginable — but it's difficult to constantly have to censor myself when all I wanted to do was be like everyone else.”
