Josh Duggar, a disgraced reality television star, was convicted guilty of child pornography charges.

Josh Duggar, a former reality television star, was arrested immediately Thursday after a federal jury convicted him of downloading and possessing child pornography.

The jury in Fayetteville, Arkansas, around 225 kilometers northwest of Little Rock, found the 33-year-old Duggar guilty of receiving and possessing child pornography on one count each.

When he is sentenced, he faces up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $US250,000 for each offence.

"Regardless of money, social rank, or celebrity, our office will continue to pursue those who attempt to exploit and victimize children through the downloading, possession, and sharing of child pornography," said US Attorney Clay Fowlkes of Arkansas' western district, who prosecuted the case.

US District Judge Timothy Brooks stated that punishment will take place in approximately four months, according to Fayetteville television station KNWA.

"We accept the jury's decision and look forward to continue this fight on appeal," one of Duggar's defense attorneys, Justin Gelfand, said.

Duggar and his big Arkansas family were featured on TLC's "19 Kids and Counting" until the show was canceled in 2015 following allegations that he abused four of his sisters and a nanny.

Authorities began investigating the abuse in 2006 after receiving a report from a family acquaintance, but determined that any potential charges had lapsed due to the statute of limitations.

Duggar's parents stated that he confessed to fondling and expressed regret. Duggar publicly apologized for undefined behavior at the time and resigned as a lobbyist for the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian organization.

Duggar eventually apologized for his pornography addiction and for cheating on his wife, referring to himself as "the worst hypocrite of all time."

In the child pornography case, the judge ordered that jurors could hear testimony regarding how Duggar admitted to assaulting four girls in 2003.

According to a family acquaintance, Duggar informed her about the abuse.

Federal investigators claimed they began investigating after a detective with the Little Rock Police Department discovered child pornographic files being exchanged via a computer associated with Duggar.

In May, a federal agent testified that photos showing sexual assault of minors, including toddlers, were downloaded onto a computer at Duggar's car dealership in 2019.

Duggar's lawyers contended that the photographs were downloaded or posted into Duggar's computer by someone else.

However, the jury was not swayed.

Jim Bob Duggar, Duggar's father and a co-star on the reality show, is running in a special election for a vacant state Senate seat in northeastern Arkansas, with the primary election scheduled for Tuesday.

He formerly served in the Arkansas House of Representatives.
