A man who confessed to the murder of more than ten young boys was assassinated by a mob after evading arrest.

According to the BBC, authorities have launched a manhunt for the fugitive who confessed to murdering the youngsters over a five-year period.

He admitted to drugging the youngsters and swallowing their blood in certain instances.

He was detained in July in connection with the disappearance of two children and later confessed to the murder of other children.

On Wednesday, Wanjala was scheduled to appear in court in Nairobi but did not appear.

"Special service agents had been tracking him throughout Western Kenya, but he was recognized by villagers in Bungoma and battered to death before our agents could apprehend him," the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tweeted on Friday.

"Wanjala confessed to detectives that he was responsible for the murders. Since then, he has been detained until his strange disappearance two days ago."

According to the DCI, Wanjala was 15 years old when he murdered 12-year-old Purity Maweu before "drinking her blood."

This was the start of a wave of child disappearances and executions, which left parents and guardians fearful for their children's safety.

The DCI stated that his arrest followed a forensic investigation that brought together top detectives and experts from the department's several specialized departments.

Wanjala disposed of his victims' bodies in a woodland area of the capital.

"Their investigation established that he was involved in at least ten murders, the first of which was the death of 12-year-old Purity Maweu," the DCI added.

He was described by police as a "bloodthirsty vampire" who was "responsible for at least ten cold-blooded kid killings."

It is unknown how the serial killer fled from his cell at Nairobi's Jogoo Road Police Station, but local media stated that three police officials had been arrested in connection with his escape.

The bodies of other children believed to have perished at the hands of Wanjala have yet to be discovered.

He lacked remorse and apparently admitted to authorities that he took "a great deal of pleasure" from murdering his victims.
