Later that night, she died in the hospital.

The Herald Sun quoted Olivia's mother Yana as saying, "Our lives will never be the same."

“How was it that Olivia was the only one who took it all out of the seven children in the buggy?

I have the distinct impression that she was sent there to save them all. Without her, there would almost certainly have been more injuries and deaths. It simply makes no sense. A life can be taken in a fraction of a second. It's incredible. I'm not sure why this was thrown at us.”

Olivia had stated as she dropped her off at the playdate, "Bye Mum, I'll be OK."

Yana is haunted by those remarks, as she wishes for her daughter to be remembered as a cheeky and sassy young lady.

“She was so vibrant, she was so much fun,” she recalled.

“We had so much planned, so many dreams, and we're only now realizing they've all come crashing down.”

'Awful accident'

None of the children were wearing helmets at the time of the event.

Another four-year-old girl had critical upper-body injuries and was evacuated to the hospital.

Five additional children, three girls and two boys, were evaluated at the site by paramedics and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Stevens and Emily's family, the Gibsons, had grown close following the two girls' kindergarten connection.

Yana referred to them as "adorable" folks.

“We've been extremely good friends for a long time; Olivia's had numerous playdates there and nothing has ever happened,” she explained.

“When I left the house, I had no idea something like this could happen, as (Emily's mother) Abbey was usually so circumspect.

I had no idea they were going to take the children on a ride.

The entire situation is heartbreaking since we were developing such a fantastic bond. "I love my family; it's not that I despise them, but it's difficult to face them right now. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to. I understand they are distressed as well, but sorry is insufficient.”

Abbey Gibson remarked that the tragedy had left her entire family "devastated."

“We are truly sorry; it was a horrific accident,” Gibson stated.

“We made every effort to save Olivia. We are simply heartbroken.”

Damien, Abbey's 33-year-old husband, has been charged with culpable driving, reckless conduct endangering life, and recklessly inflicting injury.
