Premier Dominic Perrottet of NSW has announced a big increase in the number of health workers in the state.

"I want to give a special shout-out to our health workers, who have done a great job over the past two years," he said.

A cap on wage increases for people who work in public health will be raised from 2.5% to 3% this year and to 3.5% the following year.

"That's up to a 6.5% pay raise for our government workers over the next two years," said Mr. Perrottet.

It comes after worries about long-term problems with not having enough staff and calls from many in the industry for better pay and working conditions.

Between now and 2026, the government will spend $4.5 billion to hire more doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other health workers.

Mr. Perrottet said, "Today, we're announcing the biggest boost to our health workforce in the history of our state and the biggest in the country."

Mr. Perrottet said that those who live in rural and regional areas would also benefit from better services.

"It would be easy to stop investing, but that's not the best way to handle things right now," he said.
