Orgies, blackmail, extortion, and Iran hostages: The ridiculous allegations leveled against Florida Representative Matt Gaetz.

A rumored orgy involving prostitutes. Accusations of having sex with a minor. A photograph of a woman wearing only a hula hoop as a trophy. And a complex ransom scheme involving an American hostage in Iran who is almost certainly dead.

Even by Florida standards, the Matt Gaetz saga is ridiculous — and only gets stranger by the day.

Prior to this week, the young Florida congressman and ally of former President Donald Trump was best known for his ambitious populism and promontory coiffure, just like his mentor.

However, the Republican has endured a constant barrage of scandalous headlines this week.

Most significantly, he is being prosecuted by the Justice Department for reportedly having sex with a 17-year-old girl and paying for her to fly across state lines with him, thus breaching federal sex-trafficking laws.

Rep. Mat Gaetz is embroiled in a slew of controversies, including an investigation by the Justice Department into allegations of having sexual relations with a 17-year-old teen.

Gaetz denies the charges — but not the investigation's presence.

Then, on Thursday, CNN said he showed fellow lawmakers only naked images of women he claimed to have slept with, including one photographed wearing a hula hoop.

Additionally, two of Gaetz's adversaries have said that the FBI has photographs of him in a "sexual orgy with underage prostitutes."

All of which makes his knack for posing without pants on Instagram, as he did in a July post captioned, "Covid job!" seem mild in comparison.

This is how the new Gaetz saga has so far unfolded:

The New York Times broke the news Tuesday of the sex-trafficking probe, which was conducted in the final months of the previous administration.

The 38-year-old Pensacola resident — whose December engagement to Harvard business school student Ginger Luckey, 26, was confirmed on Twitter by Fox News's Jeanine Pirro — immediately denied having sex with a minor or moving one across state lines.

“In the best words possible. I deny ever having been in a relationship with someone who was underage,” he told The Post on Tuesday.

“That is not true,” he maintained.

However, Gaetz raised even more eyebrows when he admitted to the Times that some of his past "generosity" toward former gal pals might be resurfacing.

“All I know is that it involves women,” he told the newspaper when asked about the inquiry.

“I'm suspicious that someone is attempting to reclassify my goodwill toward ex-girlfriends as something more heinous.”

Soon afterwards, a fresh squall of news — this time involving underage sex trafficking victims, an orgy, and a $25 million extortion scheme — demonstrated just how much more heinous things might get.

Gaetz appeared on Fox News with Tucker Carlson just hours after the Times story broke.

He was there on tape, ostensibly to set the record straight.

Rather than that, Gaetz crafted a twisting tale in which he and his father, Don, a wealthy former Florida politician, were portrayed as heroic victims of a massive blackmail plot.

“What is occurring,” he explained to Carlson about the DOJ leak to the Times, “is an extortion attempt against me and my family involving a former Department of Justice official.”

Gaetz asserted that the ex-official, the antagonist in his supposed blackmail scheme, is attorney David McGee, a former Florida federal prosecutor.

“On March 16, my father received a text message requesting that we meet,” Gaetz said. “In which an individual requested $25 million in return for resolving horrendous sex-trafficking charges against me,” he explained to Carlson.

He and his father approached the feds, who were "so worried about this attempted bribery of a member of Congress that they asked my father to wear a wire," Gaetz told Carlson.

The feds must release the resulting audio tape, he told Carlson, saying it would establish his innocence and expose "a conspiracy to defraud my family."

McGee leaked the DOJ's sex-trafficking investigation to the Times after the extortion attempt failed, Gaetz concluded in the shocking interview.

Then there's the hostage situation in Iran.

McGee and ex-Air Force intelligence officer Bob Kent, Gaetz alleges, did not really want the money for themselves.

They hoped to use the funds to secure the release of Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who was abducted by Iran in 2007 and declared dead last year by his relatives.

Yeah, and how are those rumors of human trafficking?

“Providing flights and hotel rooms for people you are dating who are of legal age is not a crime,” Gaetz told Carlson, a denial that could have achieved less than he expected in terms of clearing his name.

McGee, for his part, has refuted Gaetz's hostage-extortion plot charges, describing them as a "blatant attempt to draw attention away from the fact that he is under investigation for sex trafficking of minors."

And McGee is battling Gaetz with his own banner-headline mud.

Which takes us to the ostensible orgy.

Gaetz has provided the Washington Examiner with a string of text messages and other documents he claims detail McGee and Kent's alleged blackmail attempt — including the pair's reference to the FBI possessing photographs of the congressman in a "sexual orgy with underage prostitutes."

The document has not been checked, and the document's redundant reference to a "sexual orgy" goes unmentioned.

On Friday, text messages surfaced purporting to link Gaetz to Joel Greenberg, a political friend and Seminole County tax official currently facing charges of underage sex trafficking.

Greenberg's arrest — for falsely fabricating a false identification for a minor girl "to promote his attempts to participate in commercial sex acts" — was what first brought Gaetz to the attention of the feds.

According to text messages obtained by the Daily Beast, Greenberg appears to have asked one of his employees to produce a drivers license for Gaetz, who had lost his and needed a fast replacement in order to board a flight.

The congressman regularly boasted to anonymous Florida legislators about women he met through Greenberg — even flashing images of them in different stages of undress around at parties, The Washington Post reported Friday night.

Finally, to top off the week, his communications director, Florida native Luke Ball, removed all references to Gaetz from his Twitter biography and tendered his resignation.

“The offices of Congressman Matt Gaetz and Luke Ball have concluded that it is in the best interests of both parties to part ways,” a joint statement read. “We value his time in our office and wish him the best in the future.”
