Matt Gaetz's ex-girlfriend agrees to cooperate with the feds' sex crimes investigation.
According to a report on Friday, a former girlfriend of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) has agreed to cooperate with federal investigators looking into whether the congressman paid minors and escorted them or offered them gifts in exchange for sex.
The woman, who was not identified, is a former Capitol Hill staffer with a relationship with Gaetz that CNN reported dates all the way back to the summer of 2017.
The woman's willingness to speak comes just days after Joel Greenberg, a former Florida county tax collector and longtime friend of Gaetz, pleaded guilty in federal court in Orlando to six counts, including sex trafficking of a minor. Greenberg also admitted to paying at least one minor for sex with him and other men.
Greenberg's plea agreement and Monday's hearing made no mention of Gaetz.
Along with the sex trafficking angle, investigators are looking into whether the pro-Trump firebrand and his associates attempted to secure government jobs for some of the women they paid for sex, according to the Associated Press.
The feds are also investigating Gaetz's ties to the medical marijuana industry, including whether his associates attempted to influence Gaetz's legislation.
Gaetz has denied the allegations repeatedly and stated that he will not resign from Congress. The congressman's third term has portrayed himself as a victim of a politicized Justice Department.
Earlier this month, Gaetz referred to himself as a "wanted man by the deep state" during a rally in Florida with Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
“They will not silence me, we will not retreat, and the truth will triumph,” Gaetz concluded.
According to the Daily Beast, Gaetz snorted cocaine and had sex with an alleged escort at an Orlando resort where he was the featured speaker at a "Trump Defender Gala" last week.
Gaetz's representatives did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on the CNN report.
