Man killed in shooting near downtown Durham

A grim investigation is underway by the Durham police following a fatal shooting incident in the early hours of Saturday morning, near downtown.

The police were alerted to the incident via a ShotSpotter alert at 1:32 a.m., between Mallard Avenue and Neville Street, an area off North Elizabeth Street.

Upon arrival, they discovered a man inflicted with a gunshot wound. He was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The identity of the deceased remains undisclosed by the Durham police. As of Saturday afternoon, the motive behind the shooting remains clouded in uncertainty.

Tragically, this marks the third fatal shooting in Durham within a span of two days. Previously on Aug. 31, two individuals lost their lives to gun violence within minutes of each other. The first incident unfolded at the intersection of Holloway and Brye streets, followed by the second on North Miami Boulevard.

Anyone possessing information regarding this incident is urged to contact Durham Investigator L. Sprinkle at 919-560-4440 ext. 29248 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
