Around 9 p.m. on Friday, police were called to a house on Langdon Drive in Mernda after hearing that a child had been seriously hurt.
When the police got to the house, they were horrified to find that the 6-month-old baby was dead.
A 36-year-old woman who was hurt so badly that she could die was flown to the hospital and is still being watched by police there.
Officers haven't talked to her yet, as far as we know.
A statement from Victoria Police said, "At this point, police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."
At this point, no one has been charged because the investigation into the tragedy is still going on.
Nearby people left flowers in front of the house as a sign of respect.
"It's terrible to hear that such a small child died in such a terrible way. "It's terrible," a local man named Sam Beer told Nine News.
