Jeanette Zacarias Zapata was knocked out at the age of 18.
Last Saturday in Montreal, Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata succumbed to injuries she sustained in a fight against Terrebonne's Marie-Pier Houle.
18-year-old Zapata was airlifted to a Montreal hospital after he was struck unconscious by Houle at IGA Stadium. Four rounds into the battle and it was called off. Groupe Yvon Michel, the event's promoter, announced Zapata's death in a message on Instagram.
This afternoon at 3:45 p.m., a representative of her family informed us that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata had died. Yvon Michel wrote on Twitter, "This awful announcement has devastated the entire Groupe Yvon Michel team."
Meanwhile, throughout the fight, boxer Zapata was apparently convulsing. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors put him into an artificially-induced stupor. It's been claimed that she passed away with her husband by her side.
According to The Sun, after learning of Zapata's death, Houle took to social media to express her sympathies to his family.
Her opponent thanked her for respecting her wish not to remark further. A superb athlete like Jeanette Zacarias Zapata's untimely demise leaves me sad and disappointed. The Martinez family and her husband Jovanni Martinez have my deepest sympathies and sorrow. "May God illuminate your soul and receive it in his grandeur."
There was also a statement from the World Boxing Council.
A statement from WBC president Maurice Sulaimán said: "The whole boxing family affiliated with The WBC, and boxing in general lament this irreparable loss. Jeanette's family and friends have our heartfelt sympathies. Godspeed, my friend.
Against Houle, Zapata fought for the sixth time in her professional boxing career.
