Out of jealousy, a man set fire to Vic's house.

A man set fire to a house in the southeast of Melbourne because he thought that the man who lived there was sleeping with his girlfriend.

Jai Whitten, who is 24 years old, was sentenced to four years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to setting fires and acting carelessly in a way that put serious injury at risk.

In the early hours of October 26, 2016, Whitten poured two cans of gasoline onto the porch of the Elwood home.

He lit the gas on fire and then drove away in a getaway car.

The fire alarm woke the man sleeping inside, and he was able to get out without getting hurt.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire, but it cost more than $128,000 to fix the damage.

A man went to jail because he set fire to a house because he was jealous of a man who was sleeping there.

Whitten, who was addicted to cocaine, ice, and heroin, told a psychologist that he chose the house because he thought the victim was sleeping with his girlfriend.

County Court Judge Geoffrey Chettle said in his sentencing remarks that the 24-year-old said he was frustrated, angry, and high at the time of the crime.

"If this is true, it's scary that you'd act so dangerously in response to something like this," the judge said on Tuesday.

A psychologist found that Whitten had trouble controlling his anger and was likely to commit more crimes if he didn't get help.

The psychologist said that Whitten's anger problems and bad behavior would only get worse the longer he was in jail.

Judge Chettle pointed out that Whitten had apologized for his crimes, pleaded guilty as soon as he could, and had a stable place to live when he got out of jail.

The judge also said that the 24-year-chances old's of getting better were good as long as he didn't use drugs and dealt with his anger issues.

Whitten went to jail for four years, but in just under two he will be able to get out.
