Brooklyn Judge Harriet Thompson's misdeeds have ended her career, which means the surrogate is dead.

As a surrogate judge, Harriet Thompson is in charge of the estates of people who have died in Brooklyn. She became a judge on January 1, 2019, after winning the seat in both the primary and the general election. As of Dec. 31, 2026, her last day was supposed to be when she would be 70. Instead, her time on the bench came to an end Friday morning when the state's Chief Administrative Judge, Larry Marks, told Thompson that she had to give up all of her keys and access cards and any computers or cell phones that the court system owns.

So now she's done, and soon the state Commission on Judicial Conduct should say that she should be removed from office and lose her $210,900 salary.

As you read in these columns, we've known for a long time that Thompson wasn't fit and that this was coming. When Thompson was in charge, we were very happy that he was done with being crazy for a while. When the court inspector general found out that Thompson was biased and discriminated against other people, it made her angry.

Thompson told us that the conduct commission had done a lot of different things to her. Besides living in Queens, another thing is that she lives there illegally. When the commission sees her crazed, illegal campaign against Brooklyn Public Administrator Rick Buckheit and her years-long interference in his independent municipal office, they will know that it isn't right for her to do that. Now Thompson's war is over, and Thompson has been sent away.

When Surrogate Margarita Lopez Torres is chosen, Thompson's case docket should be given to her. Because Brooklyn only needs one surrogate, Margarita Lopez Torres should be chosen. When Surrogate Lopez Torres retires on December 31 and new Surrogate Rosemarie Montalbano starts on January 1, she can be the only surrogate for all of the babies.

Montalbano then has to find a qualified deputy public administrator and lawyer, while he fights off the machine's temptations. And the Legislature should get rid of the second, unnecessary surrogate judgeship, which they made a big mistake with in 2005.
