After a terrible fire in Victoria, Australia, burned through the home of a young boy and his family, more than 40% of the boy's body was burned.

Elijah Whitton was sleeping in the Mildura home when the fire broke out on Sunday, May 1. The fire is thought to have started in the laundry.

Family members pulled the "active and loving" two-year-old out of the house, but he or she was in a very bad way.

Mildura is close to the border between Victoria and NSW, and Elijah had to be flown to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and put into a coma there.

Elijah has had several surgeries and procedures in the 11 days since the fire, including a wound debridement to get rid of the dead tissue.

42 percent of the little boy's body is burned to the third degree.

His family has been told that because he is a trauma patient, the procedures will go on for months.

Alycia Whitton, Elijah's sister, said, "We've been told that this is just the start of his road to recovery."

Alyia set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Elijah's medical care, as well as for his recovery and rehabilitation.

In just two days, it has raised almost $10,000.

Alyia Whitton said, "On behalf of my whole family, we are so grateful for all the love and support we are getting from not only the Sunraysia community but from all of Australia."

"I want to make sure that anyone who donates knows that the money will go straight to Elijah's medical bills and, more specifically, to his recovery."
