Drake Bell, the star of Nickelodeon's Drake and Josh, has been charged with attempted child endangerment.
Drake Bell, a former Nickelodeon star, has entered a not guilty plea to two counts of child abuse in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
Bell, 34, who gained notoriety as a teenager on the show Drake and Josh, faces one count of attempted child endangerment and one count of disseminating material harmful to juveniles, officials confirmed.
The court docket, which uses Bell's legal first name - Jared - specifies December 1, 2017 as the date of the offense.
The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday afternoon that a female juvenile victim, age 15, filed a report with her local police department in Canada in October 2018.
She stated that the incident occurred the previous year in a Cleveland nightclub.
“(A)n investigation revealed that the victim, who had been in a relationship with Bell for several years, attended his December 2017 concert,” the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.
“While there, Bell violated his duty of care, putting the victim at risk of harm. Additionally, the investigation revealed that Bell sent the victim inappropriate social media messages in the months preceding the concert.”
Proceedings in the courts
Bell was released on a US$2,500 bond and ordered to submit a DNA sample to the Sheriff's Office within the next 24 hours during Thursday's hearing, which is standard court procedure.
NBC's request for comment was not responded to by Bell's representative.
Bell's attorney, Ian Friedman, was not immediately available for comment; however, when contacted by phone at the law firm, a representative stated that Friedman would not be commenting on the case.
According to the docket, Bell is scheduled to appear in court again on June 23 for a pre-trial hearing.
Between 2004 and 2007, the actor and musician starred in four seasons of Drake and Josh.
The popular sitcom chronicled the exploits of the show's title characters, who were stepbrothers. Bell also performed the show's theme song, "I Found A Way," and has worked as a musician, releasing several albums and touring.
His most recent album, "Sesiones En Casa," was released last year. The title translates from Spanish to English as "Sessions at House."
Bell has been active on social media this week, sharing concert videos and encouraging fans to order Cameo videos from him, but he has yet to address the charges.
