'Daddy shot mama,' a 3-year-old kid reveals a man's assertion that his wife committed suicide.
When their 3-year-old informed authorities, "Daddy shot mommy," a Texas man who claimed his common-law wife killed herself after a quarrel was exposed as her suspected murderer.
Dabreon Banks, 27, is charged with fatally shooting Kimberly Hernandez, 24, on Monday night in their Houston residence.
According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the couple's toddler daughter and 20-month-old son were both inside the residence at the time.
Banks initially stated that he and Hernandez were "play fighting" when the pistol went off, but later stated that Hernandez shot herself in the head after a physical altercation over text messages on his phone.
Neighbors reported hearing Banks yelling shortly after the gunshots rang out that his wife had just shot herself.
However, deputies reported that the couple's kid observed the incident and informed police that "Daddy shot mommy."
"Officers interviewed a juvenile eyewitness who stated, 'Dad shot mum.' "She made a firearm gesture with her hand," prosecutors stated in court on Wednesday, according to KTRK.
"Officers interviewed another witness who reported that the same child informed her, 'Daddy shot mommy.'"
Banks was arrested and accused with murder at his residence. He remains in jail on a $75,000 bond.
The two children sustained no injuries and are being looked after by family members.
