Bluefin tuna weighing 271 kilograms is the biggest ever fish sold at Sydney Fish Markets.
Sydney's fishmongers were taken aback when the largest ever bluefin tuna arrived at the markets following its capture off the coast.
On Tuesday, a massive northern bluefin tuna weighing hundreds of kilograms shocked Sydney fishmongers after being trapped off the NSW mid north coast.
The 271 kilogram giant pacific bluefin tuna was caught off the coast of Coffs Harbour and is the "largest ever" to be received at Pyrmont markets.
The giant fish is about four times the size of a normal mature fish of its genus, according to a spokesperson for the Sydney Fish Markets.
“Sydney Fish Market has reported that the average size of Northern Blue Fin Tuna is about 50-60kgs,” a spokesperson said.
The fish was sold to a single store — Claudio's Seafood, an iconic local seafood establishment.
“That is a very large fish,” Sydney Fish Markets posted on Facebook.
“Take a look at this massive 271kg Northern Bluefin Tuna that was spotted this morning at the auction!
This was captured by one of our suppliers, the Claudarah, a longliner vessel operating off the coast of Coffs Harbour.”
The Sydney Fish Markets are comprised of six retailers of fresh fish, a fruit and vegetable market, and a deli. Every day, retailers sell customers over 100 different species of fish.
