Some of the people shot in a Buffalo supermarket were the head of a food pantry and the mom of an ex-fire chief.

A woman who died in the Buffalo massacre was 65 years old. She went to the store with her sister to buy strawberries for shortcakes, but she couldn't run as fast as her sister, who hid in a freezer.

Another woman, the 86-year-old mother of the city's former fire commissioner, had just left her sick elderly husband at a nursing home and was on her way to the Tops Friendly Market to buy groceries when she was killed.

A 32-year-old woman's mother said she found out her daughter had died when she saw a video of her being shot on social media.

Payton Gendron, 18, is accused of killing 10 people, including the 77-year-old head of a local food pantry. Her family says Gendron was just like the young men she would have taught.

"You don't expect this when your mother goes grocery shopping," said Pamela Pritchett, 55, whose mother, Pearl Young, 77, worked as a substitute teacher and fed people in need in the city's Central Park neighborhood before she was killed.

Pearl Young liked to sing, dance, and spend time with her family.

Ruth Whitfield, the mother of former Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield, was reportedly killed by the same young white supremacist while she was shopping at the Tops.

Sunday, Garnell told The Post that his father doesn't know yet that Ruth has died.

Garnell Whitfield said, "She was at the nursing home every day taking care of my dad. She shaved him, cut his nails, cleaned his ears, cut his hair, washed and bathed him, and made sure his room was decorated for the holidays." "She gave her whole life to her family, but the last eight years were especially for him.

"This happened yesterday when she was leaving the nursing home and stopped at the store around the corner," he said, his voice breaking.

Pritchett said that her mom "shopped a lot at the Tops."

She would go grocery shopping and take the bus back home on warm days like yesterday."

Pritchett said that Young worked as a substitute teacher until she died. Most of the time, she taught special education.

The alleged shooter's daughter said, "She taught young men like him."

The day before the shooting, Pritchett talked to her mother.

"We just talked about simple things. I just told her I'm finally done with COVID. "I was getting better from COVID, so I didn't want to go there until I was," said Pritchett.

You were so nice and pretty inside and out!"

Wayne Jones, Chaney's son, told the New York Times that his mother was killed while out shopping with her sister.

Jones said that Chaney's sister was able to escape to the freezer, but "my mom can't really walk like she used to."

Dezzelyn McDuffie, Roberta Drury's mother, told the Buffalo News that she found out her daughter had died after seeing a video of her being shot on social media. Roberta Drury was 32 years old.

McDuffie told the paper, "She had just left Tops."

Aaron Salter Jr., a 55-year-old former Buffalo police officer who worked as a security guard at a supermarket, was shot and killed by the shooter.

His son Aaron Salter III told the Daily Beast, "Today is a shock." "I think he probably saved some lives today. He's a good guy."

The Buffalo News says that Katherine Massey, another woman who went to the grocery store to shop, was also killed in the chaos.

In a text message to the newspaper, Katherine Massey's sister Barbara Massey said, "She had a beautiful soul."

Gendron, who had posted a white supremacist manifesto online, is said to have killed 10 people and hurt 3 others at the supermarket on Saturday afternoon. Officials say he drove "hours" from his home in Conklin, NY, which is mostly white, to a grocery store in a mostly black neighborhood.

Eleven of the people who were killed were black, and two were white.

Gendron, who was "heavily armed" and had the word "N-word" painted on the barrel of one of his three guns, once threatened to shoot his high school classmates.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said Sunday at the True Bethel Baptist Church in Buffalo that the rest of the world watching Buffalo deal with the "unthinkable" is a "symbol of strength."

She talked about how angry she was about the shooting more than once.

"This is a whole new level, where you've attacked people because of the color of their skin, because you're a coward. "I want to shut those voices up right now," Hochul said.

"Make sure that people will talk about Buffalo, but I want them to say that Buffalo was the last place this ever happened. We will stop this right here because we are going to stand up, and all of our white brothers and sisters need to do the same in churches all over this state and country, because an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us because we are all God's people.

She was angry that social media sites let "this hatred grow and spread like a virus."

"As we speak, it's going around the world. Hochul said, "Others will see what happened in my beloved community and think, 'Oh, that's how you do it.'" "That's the party's plan. That's how you attack peaceful, God-loving people: you hit them on a busy Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, because that was a zip code with a lot of African-Americans. Everything is in the manifesto.
