Geelong beat the Swans badly in the first half, turning the most-anticipated grand final in years into a one-sided massacre.

After Robbie Williams blew everyone away with his rocking performance during the pre-match entertainment, the blockbuster got off to a hot start.

Max Holmes, a star player for the Geelong Cats, was taken off the team on Saturday morning because he couldn't get over a hamstring injury.

But it didn't matter for long because Geelong scored seven of the game's first eight goals and led by 40 points in the second quarter. The big lead after the first quarter in the Grand Final was the biggest since 1989.

Geelong had never scored six goals in the first quarter of a grand final until today.

Jimmy Bartel, who won the Brownlow medal with the Cats, called it "embarrassing" for the Swans. Kane Cornes, who played for Port Adelaide, told SEN that it was "the worst Swans performance in a long time."

At halftime, the Cats were ahead by 9.8 points (62 to 26) and looked like they were very close to winning their ninth premiership cup.

For the Swans to win the grand final, they had to make a huge comeback, but the first quarter of the premiership has been a disaster.

Mitch Duncan and Brad Close kicked two quick goals to give their team a 48-point lead, which is the most in the game.

"Oh no," James Brayshaw said on Channel 7 after Brad Close took an interception mark deep in his 50. "That kick was never going to get where it was meant to go."

The third came quickly, and after Isaac Smith kicked his third of the game, the lead grew to 54 points.
